When a great coaching conversation goes absolutely nowhere.

You’re 25 minutes into the session.

The client is talking. You’re listening.

There have been some interesting insights. You’ve asked some pretty good questions.

And then it hits you.

What are we actually coaching toward?

Somewhere between the opening question and the fascinating conversation that followed...

the goal disappeared.

And if you’re being really truthful, you’re not entirely sure there was one in the first place.

Sound familiar?

A GREAT CONVERSATION ISN’T ALWAYS GREAT COACHING.

This is one of those uncomfortable truths we don’t talk about enough.

Coaches can become so focused on being present, following the client, staying curious, and not directing the conversation that the session begins to drift .

The client talks. You explore.

One thing leads to another.

There may even be an aha moment.

But when the session ends, there’s a question hanging in the air:

Did we actually get anywhere?

That doesn’t mean you need to drag your client towards an outcome or turn coaching into a checklist.

But there is a difference between following the client and simply following the conversation .

And that difference matters.

No scripts. No rigid formulas. No forcing the client towards the goal you wrote down 40 minutes ago.

Just better awareness of where the conversation is going, why it’s going there, and whether that’s still where your client wants to go.

Sometimes, you need to give the conversation somewhere to go

We’ll look at:

➜ Why apparently strong coaching sessions can still drift

➜ What happens when the client’s goal changes halfway through the session

➜ How to establish what the client actually wants from the conversation

➜ How to check whether you’re still coaching what you agreed to coach

➜ How to bring a wandering session back without hijacking it

➜ Practical language you can use when you suddenly realise that you have lost track of where it's all going!

Meet Cheryl Close

Cheryl Close, M.Ed., MCC, is an International Coaching Federation (ICF) Master Certified Coach with more than eighteen years' experience coaching leaders, professionals, and coaches around the world.

For the past eight years, Cheryl has specialized in mentor coaching, supporting more than one hundred coaches as they prepared for their ACC, PCC, and MCC credentials.

Before becoming a coach, Cheryl was a classroom teacher and school principal—an experience that continues to shape the way she mentors today.

Her approach is practical, encouraging, and deeply developmental. Rather than simply assessing competencies, Cheryl helps coaches understand what excellent coaching sounds like, feels like, and looks like in practice.

She teaches on ICF Level 1 and Level 2 coach training programmes and facilitates mentor coaching, performance evaluation preparation, and written exam preparation for coaches working towards their ACC and PCC credentials.

Above all, Cheryl creates a learning environment where coaches feel safe to be challenged, supported, and encouraged to grow. Her mentor coaching groups are intentionally small, highly interactive, and always judgement-free—because the best learning happens when coaches feel confident enough to be curious.
